The important thing is you cannot turn these people around. Arguing with them is fruitless because they don’t want to see the data. They will only come around when the people they trust change their position.
This is why we need to focus on protecting doctors who speak out.
I think deference to authority is part of it, but I think the turning point or red pill moment is when people realize that the people making all these decisions, the "authority figures" don't actually have our best interests in mind. They are, in fact, doing these things intentionally (not stupidly), and gasp perhaps have an evil agenda... Once the mind makes that connection, it cannot go back. People who are unwilling to make that connection have cognitive dissonance because such a realization would shake their entire world. Hence, why they prefer to trust that the "authorities" have their best interests in mind, while nothing could be further from the truth.
