People have a world view that was essentially given to them from birth though childhood. They didn't build it purposely. It's an accretion.

If that is destroyed, they are lost because they have no idea how to rebuild it. So they defend their world view as an act of self defense. Their only hope is hitting some crisis, tipping point, at which point they can no longer silence the inner voice.

For me, the crisis was when I realized that the official 9/11 story was a lie. Governments kill people. Even their own people. They are not friends of humanity. The 20th century alone demonstrates this.
