This passage is meant to humble us individually, yet it's often used, like others as a basis to enforce the standard of never questioning god despite the fact that He is never above proving Himself and wants us to be inquisitive always. Thomas doubted and Jesus proved Himself then FORGAVE HIM. Instead of the focus being on the fact that Jesus did answer Thomas, "doubting Thomas" became a mainstream slang in the Christian community as a whole as a way to shame people for daring to question the status quo.
Does that clear up some of my disdain for Christianity? Christians are NOT the default good guys. They are capable if evil just like any one of us. If you haven't figured out that evil comes in ALL forms regardless of religion, color or ideology, then you are still very much asleep.
