They are constrained by rules. Without those rules, we wouldn't stand a chance.

Exactly what the rules are is a closely guarded secret. From observation it's probably safe to assume these 2 rules:

1. They must inform us of what they are about to do.
2. They must get our consent for whatever they do.

They aren't happy about those rules and they sneak around them as best they can.

1. They inform us in a way that is obvious to those with eyes to see, but can be dismissed by those still asleep.
2. They can trick us into hurting each other without consent.

The rules seems to apply to THEM, whatever THEY are. Humanity does not seem to be subject to those rules.
