Nobody wanted to print Animal Farm so doubt very much that #2 or 3 apply. I go with #1.

Not always, but in this case its an accurate write-up, from what I know. I would be very surprised to find there were any skeletons in his cupboard. There were, and still are, a lot of decent people in the world.
