auto question: anyone know what a broken shock on a car sounds like? this shit is driving me crazy and i dont want to get fucked over. the sound comes from my back drivers side wheel. sometimes it makes the noise sounding like i ran something over. i know for sure i need new brake pads. could this be the problem?
Depending on vehicle most likely a strut. Most compact/medium sized cars early 1980s and on will have struts. When bad will make a clanky rattle like sound especially over bumps.
These are dangerous to replace yourself if you don't have experience or proper tools. Prob couple hundred bucks to replace. (USD)
ancroidubh gives good advice.
best of luck fren
Possibly the alignment. I just had this problem. It ate my tire up. Get the four wheel alignment which will have to include at least one new tire. I had to buy a whole set. Much, much better now.
While parked, try to bounce that corner of the car up and down by pushing down on the fender or pulling up on the wheel arch. There should be resistance to the action, especially when changing direction. If it moves freely or continues to bounce then the shock is bad. If the car is high mileage, over 100K miles, all the shocks are probably bad. Replace all of them at the same time. If your car has MacPherson struts and you don’t know what you are doing, have a pro change them, you could get badly injured.
My advice: if it’s either the shock absorbers OR the brakes, get them fixed, it could prevent a wreck.
thank you much!
