One should not allow ideologues to tell the military how to behave. Apparently the General in charge was told he could choose between losing his job, or organizing this offensive.

Also, the western media was full of this Kherson counteroffensive thingie. We were told it would happen in late August.

Did they think the Russians weren't aware of that?

Duh.
