Michael Crichton's novel Timeline - the one where they sort of time travel to medieval France - there is some sort of technology that allows the travelers to speak and understand the language- sort of a universal translator in the ear. The book describes it as a device that is inserted into the ear via a type if warm wax so it looks like part of the ear. This reminds me of that.
