Electric on a large scale works just fine - but you need the energy density of MSR or higher to make it work.
Unfortunately, just before the environmentalists decided their new bogeyman would be carbon, they had just won after 50 years of targeting nuclear, so the only sane option to combat the 'threat' of destroying the biosphere was firmly off the table.
Hence the crazy, obsessive call for anything that isn't hydrocarbon, even if it requires more hydrocarbon to work right. (Also I guess the Globalist money against 'climate change' didn't hurt)
