Just for fun, I searched all posts containing 1776. I thought this was interesting. Post 758 mentions September 7, 1776, 246 years ago yesterday. On that date in history, the world's first submarine attack:
"During the Revolutionary War, the American submersible craft Turtle attempts to attach a time bomb to the hull of British Admiral Richard Howe's flagship Eagle in New York Harbor. It was the first use of a submarine in warfare." It was unsuccessful.
Also on that date, Abigail Adams wrote to John Adams the following: "But if we should be defeated I think we shall not be conquered. A people fired like the Romans with Love of their Country and of Liberty, a zeal for the public Good, and a Noble Emulation of Glory, will not be disheartened or dispirited by a Succession of unfortunate Events. But like them may we learn by Defeat the power of becoming invincible." Seems relevant to our current times.
On that topic, September 9, 1776, was the day that we changed our name to the United States of America and were no longer referred to as the Colonies. An interesting week.
