It's a common metaphor, but by now THE STORM is in the lexicon to mean exposure and awakening.

Storms drop massive amounts of water, and water is information.

Truss:

a framework, typically consisting of rafters, posts, and struts, supporting a roof, bridge, or other structure. "roof trusses"

Gotta have a strong roof to "ride out the storm".
