"Estate" comes from an oversimplification of the government, in that each branch is it's own estate, the fourth being in reference to the civilian growth to the DoD, acknowledging that it has gained outsized power. "Column" comes from the initial known use during the Spanish Civil War, where it literally referred to a column of troops, just they were a bunch of traitors waiting to help those marching on the position.
