I really don’t think it would be that hard to do. It seems like an elephant in the room to ignore it.

Lightning is a ton of energy all at once. To power a city you need a stable stream of energy.
It's like comparing a shotgun shell to a candle when trying to light your home.
1 second of a ton of power versus a couple hours of wax burning at a steady and dim rate.
Lightning gets its energy from wind and water in the air. Why go through the extra steps when you can just harness wind and water that's already moving? Wind, maybe, not so much, but water is the ideal.
We have TONS of energy available to us all around the world, all going to waste. The problem is not in generating energy, but rather in storing the energy before it disperses.
