Read this, great writing, great analysis.

TLDR: Russia is doing what they said they would. Destroy Nazis, destroy Ukrainian military, support breakaway Republics in Donbass, and shore up hold over Crimea. Also, prolonging the conflict to inflict maximum economic pain on the DS in the EU.
