Local business leaders travel to Switzerland for World Economic Forum
This year, Sam Johnson will participate in a workshop dealing with global
warming.
Corporate executives in attendance include Ken Lay of Enron, Bill Gates of Microsoft, William Clay Ford of Ford Motor Co., David Rockefeller, the former chairman of Chase Manhattan Bank, and Sir John Browne, group chief executive of BP Amoco.
There are many other chief executive officers of Japanese, Russian, European, African and other multinational corporations. Interestingly enough, on this level there appear to be few philosophical differences between such disparate peoples.
Those in attendance also represent the Council on Foreign Relations, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the International Chamber of Commerce, and the Prince of Wales Business Leaders Forum.
At the 1996 Conference on Human Settlements, referred to as "Habitat II," the United Nations made the unprecedented move of calling for partnerships between governments and civil society. Since then, there has been continuous activity as two of the world's most powerful organizations, the International Chamber of Commerce and the Prince of Wales Business Leaders Forum, have linked with not only the United Nations but with numerous countries around the world to form public-private partnerships.
A public-private partnership is exactly what the name suggests.
Firstly, it's a business arrangement for profit, sealed by a formal business contract. A business partnership is the most flexible arrangement for doing business that there is, and can have two or more partners and several layers of interrelated partnerships.
Secondly, its partners are both public, meaning government, and private, meaning individuals, corporations, foundations and/or nongovernmental organizations. In Racine, Sustainable Racine is such an arrangement.
Racine County, Wisconsin. Spurred by the efforts of a local business leader, Racine County was among the first communities nationwide to espouse the values of a sustainable community. Citizens have mobilized to form Sustainable Racine, a community-led organization that adopted high standards for residents and businesses and sets immediate and far-reaching goals for environmental stewardship, economic development, and social justice. Citizen groups have met on ten areas of concern to create long-range visions and concrete objectives for action. Priority goal areas include excellence in education, regional planning, neighborhood revitalization, and downtown redevelopment. (19)
