Look at the splatter pattern.

I grew up on a farm, when an animal releases a load; the load follows the direction the animal was travelling.

These look like they were thrown from the crowd, as the splatter is perpendicular to the route a horse would take.

YES! I was just thinking this and wondering if I was wrong in how it was all splayed about. Most of the poop is going sideways! My daughter's horse just pooped while it walked yesterday, and I swear the poop dropped right behind it in a row.
