Amen. I remember this phone very well. I also remember when my mother was asked if 'she wanted a private line?' And yes, we went from a 'party' to a 'private.' It was like 'Andy Griffin' when the 2 ladies on Sunday spent the day talking about their arthritis. Haha. We also were the only family on our end of the road who had a telephone, so when an emergency sprang up, someone would send one of their kids to our house to phone someone. There was no 911 only 0 for the operator. Such days, I wish I could bring them all back. Amen.
I also remember, not having Google Maps and my father having to stop at a gas station to either 'buy a map' or ask for directions. You don't see that anymore either.
Funny, I was thinking about phones from days gone by only this morning. We had a phone before the days of dials and automatic exchanges. You picked up the phone and the operator answered it. If you needed the police their number was 1. My grandparents' number was 87.
Our first two homes had party lines but we eventually got one to ourselves. Neighbours would sometimes ask to use our phone to make a call.
I don't remember anyone using the old 'pick up for the operator' phones, but I have seen a few in antique stores. I remember the party lines where you had to listen for one short ring followed by two long rings in order to know if it was for you or not on the old desk top rotary dial phone with party line. Confusing at times. However, if they were still 'private' lines, I would use a rotary dial phone today. I still have a land line and will dread the day when I will no longer be able to use one. Sometimes progress isn't all it's cracked up to be.
I am in the UK, our party lines always rang the correct number so you did not have to decode anything but if you wanted to make a call you had to pick up the phone and listen for anyone talking. If they were then you were supposed to put the phone down and try again later.
Have you seen young folk trying to use a dial phone ?
No I have not; but I have seen both my teenage granddaughters ask me what it was and how it worked. That was funny.
