I don't remember anyone using the old 'pick up for the operator' phones, but I have seen a few in antique stores. I remember the party lines where you had to listen for one short ring followed by two long rings in order to know if it was for you or not on the old desk top rotary dial phone with party line. Confusing at times. However, if they were still 'private' lines, I would use a rotary dial phone today. I still have a land line and will dread the day when I will no longer be able to use one. Sometimes progress isn't all it's cracked up to be.
I am in the UK, our party lines always rang the correct number so you did not have to decode anything but if you wanted to make a call you had to pick up the phone and listen for anyone talking. If they were then you were supposed to put the phone down and try again later.
Have you seen young folk trying to use a dial phone ?
No I have not; but I have seen both my teenage granddaughters ask me what it was and how it worked. That was funny.
