Something strange is going on, and it's not the first time I've noticed this with storms I've tracked. I've checked several wind-speed maps, like the one at the bottom of this page: https://www.trackthetropics.com/ian-2022/ and the highest wind speed I can get is about 105mph.

That's how tornadoes are measured, not hurricanes. I appreciate your skepticism but overstating hurricane strength doesn't seem to make much sense. Remember, the highest winds are in a very concentrated area near the eye wall and do not extend out very far. I'm clear over in Melbourne and winds are gusting to 40 mph right now.
