I remember being confused when I was a kid about why American blacks were protesting Sambo's restaurant chain, since 1) the kid was Indian; 2) the story was in India, and 3) Sambo was the hero protagonist anyway. It was a good lesson about a lot of things.
Little Black Sambo was my favorite book my mom read to me before bed. When she turned 65, I gifted her a copy that was identical to the one she read me from the 1950's. Nothing in it was racist.
