I always get the impression that top military brass have all been brought up on computer games where the nuclear option always produced the greatest effect and if you were caught in the blast then you went back to the start of the level and had to pick up your weapons all over again.
Also, US military advisors always assume that they can choose to hold their wars in any foreign country of their choosing. I don't think Russia will play by those rules. Once the Pentagon has been vapourised then we might get a different story from the top brass - assuming any are left.
