A major research publisher has had to retract 500 papers published since 2020 because peer reviewers were collaborating to drive the results. Their agenda and bias is not revealed in this article, but since some of the journals are medically oriented and the period covers the pandemic and vaccine rollout, bet a nickle that there are some papers on it. Peer review is utterly worthless when all the "peers" are brainwashed into the same cult of scientism lies.
Beyond that and earlier, the "publish or perish (in your academic career)" had the unsurprising effect of leading to dodgy journals. And the peers may have financial or academic connections which lead them to cover for each other. However, this is the tool that even more dangerous entities, like the CDC and FDA, use to control the agenda. Look at ivermectin: "We can't approve it for Covid because it hasn't been the subject of a peer reviewed, controlled study FOR THIS PURPOSE."
