Most people don't know why there even is a Columbus day. It has nothing to do with the discovery America. In 1891 in New Orleans 11 Italian Americans and immigrants were lynched by a mob for their alleged role in the murder of police chief David Hennessy after some of them had been acquitted at trial. To appease Italian Americans and to honor those who were lynched President Benjamin Harrison dedicated one day to honor Italians. It was called Columbus Day since Columbus was the most famous Italian. It was intended to be a one time event, not an annual occurrence.
