The dead within those piles of bodies were prisoners AND guards alike...most of whom had succumbed to typhus. Their clothing had been stolen by other prisoners because it was a precious commodity.
Official estimates put the total number of dead from all the camps at approximately 275,000 during the War period, again, most from typhus.
