It was. If they'd have moved at the speed of science, it would have been far slower and more careful. They moved at the speed of panicked politicians reacting to a crisis. They cut corners, took shortcuts, broke rules, ignored safeguards, and exploited the shit out of the system because they needed to be the first vaccine on the market. That was the vaccine that was going to grab the lion's share of the government contracts from nationalized health systems around the world.
Pfizer was first. Moderna was 3 weeks behind, and it never gained the same market share as Pfizer did. AstraZeneca was 3rd in the US and never got approval. FDA is still demanding more data from them despite having post-marketing data from over a billion people worldwide. J&J was 4th, got approval and was treated like the red-headed step-child despite being an objectively better vaccine: easy to store and transport (Pfizer required deep freeze), 1 dose instead of 2. NovaVax has a traditional vaccine made with the spike protein directly. Have you even heard of it? Probably not. It's approved, but FDA slow-walked it for a year and a half. They literally had the data for a year and a half, but didn't move a decision forward until we had gone through multiple waves of variants. Pfizer had to be first, so they "moved as the speed of Science™."
It's crystal clear the FDA was gatekeeping too. Even Moderna's vaccine has never been advanced for children, while Pfizer's has. And Moderna's comes with a warning about myocarditis, but Pfizer's doesn't. FDA has, at every turn, taken steps to swat the products of competitors and protect Pfizer's product. It's really reprehensible if you look at it.
