Probably more like the latter. I think he was starring in some show or something? Not sure, just passing on what is going on there.

Also, deepfakes don't need 3d scanning, but you can create a "digital actor" (videogame character) which you can use to get all kinds of perspectives from to help generate the deepfake that can be applied on video. Very different technologies, but visual-adjacent.
