Start with 72 hours for every person in your house (exposure kills the most people during catastrophe). Make sure that you can survive for 72 hours in any temperature, wetness & lack of clean water (include meds, lights & portable foods).
Then focus on building up 2 weeks > 2 months > 6 months > 1 year+
I haven't read in history any time that a year was needed, but being the community hero can be a great thing.
I only suggest a year due to the mindset of my upbringing that was drilled into all of us, the same person who told us to save up for a year in the 1800s also suggested 7 years would be beneficial. Most people today (especially urban) are unlikely to be able to store more than 2 months for a family, though it allows for you to have enough to get out of the city if you need to a few weeks in.
