I believe the only truism that holds, has been true, and is still true, is what Jesus James Angleton once called the "wilderness of mirrors". He was not just speaking of clandestine work, but potentially any of the channels of information available to the public.
In a wilderness of mirrors, the whole point is to convey the sensation that a truth is disclosed or clarified by a trustworthy source. Just like a mirror can reflect truth but based on how its calibrated it can also distort that reflection just enough to achieve additional purposes.
And who has the time and resources to verify for themselves information by cross checking independent (not coordinated) sources, etc? In a wilderness of mirrors, you'd have to make it your whole reason of existence to get anywhere meaningful.
