Lockdowns were never about the virus in China. They were a cover for Xi Jinping imposing martial law on regions run by his rivals. China is made up of fiefdoms ruled by different factions. He wanted the threats gone.
The "zero" tolerance squeezed those regions to death. 280 million locked down since March, but Beijing hasn't been locked down once. Guess which is a "Xi Jinping" region and which belonged to his threats.
They either surrendered to him or he'd keep choking their economies to death. If one area is always getting locked down and one region never gets locked down, where do all the business flock? He was killing these regions until they bent the knee to him.
Hu Jintao's humiliation sends the message loud and clear that Xi is fully in charge. He's broken their power bases.
