First USA sanctioned Venezuela, whose oil is perfect for making diesel, so that the refineries in Mobile lay idle, so US started importing Russian oil at great expense, because that was the only oil in the world that matched the Venezuelan sweetness - to keep diesel flowing. One cannot just refine any old oil in those refineries, as they are grade specific. If one were to try, the refinery would get all gunked up.
Oh, and then they sanctioned Russia, because Putin bad.
What did they think was going to happen?
Not to mention the fact that Venezuela was one of the richest nations in the world and is now one of the poorest, just because the USA did not agree with their election results, and muh democramacy. (Am I allowed to swear?). Russia is not so unlucky, the ruble is getting stronger, and they are rerouting exports. India, China etc. are happy to import their oil. Looks like sanctions 'worked' on Venezuela, but not Russia. Also, Venezuela is looking to join the party over at the other side.
Boomerangs anyone?
