Fluids, including hyrocarbons, in rock, assimilate various elements from the rocks they pass through and/or reside in. Does spring water contain elements that aren't in animals? (I don't know) Do animals contain elements not found in spring water? (again, I don't know) But the point I am making is that trace elements are not what hydrocarbons are made of.

I took organic chemistry and know full well what hydrocarbons are.
