For sure the mods have too much control. This isn't a liberal site. Or it's not supposed to be. It's the same at TD. It's the same everywhere you give someone at little control and the next thing you know, they're abusing it.
The concept behind this is to share information, ideas, to look at things as a community. So what if you don't agree with another persons position? As long as they aren't upsetting the community, that's what ESTABLISHES community.
Just my two cents but the essence of GAW is sliding toward a more totalitarian position. No one should be able to ban anyone arbitrarily.
