Seems kinda strange, maybe it was to mess with them because if they had not done much coding they would have a small stack of paper because they don't do any real work.

But i would think they have all sorts of metrics built into the code repository which would allow you to see what was going on.

He fired them all anyway so maybe he was just trying to keep them busy haha.
