It seems as though this is likely to be a translation problem - either by the original author or by someone translating the work. It seems as though the author may have conflated cardiac arrest with suffocating or smothering, which both cause the heart to stop beating (cardiac arrest).
Video from the event showed heaps of people piled on top of each other, which seems to have been due to a panicked crowd in a confined space.
