Soooo...
What if Eric Coomer is driving to work one morning. Driving the same route he takes every day. He gets a phone call and all of a sudden his truck accelerates through the stop sign, the brakes do not respond, and Coomer speeds across the intersection and he crashes into the building.
Coomer realizes his vehicle was hacked, and someone just tried to kill him.
But he does not know if it is "his people" because he knows to much and he is an idiot.
Or... if it is... "the other side."
Either way... you are not paranoid if they really are after you, are you.
What does he do after he crashes?
Does that make any sense at all?
What does make sense?
Now, rewatch how he interacts with the first officer who questions him?
Coomer does not know if the policeman is a real policeman or not.
Watch his body language.
Making a little more sense now?
Patriots, literally, in control.
"You are experiencing an accident."

Interesting that he only told the "truth" about crashing the car after his lawyer showed up, somebody he thought he could trust.
Somebody he thought he could count on to be a witness for him.
Up to that point, no one he was dealing with was anyone he knew.
And as we know...

This would be a good time to watch the movie again.
Such a great film. I've been thinking about it a lot lately, in fact. The seemingly random people I've come into contact with over these past two years, sometimes makes me go hmmmm, wondering if they aren't who they appear. Ever since I saw the film, I've thought to myself, "this person could be a con, or US Marshal, a bad good or a good guy." It's kind of a fun game to play I guess. But I find I end up treating everyone the same. Maybe that's not necessarily a good thing? Idk. This world is looney toons.
Only Coach Dungy really knows who they are 😂
