This is just plays into identity politics. What about instead of calling people like African American or Mexican American we started calling them American African to mess with them and say that being American is more important so that part has to go first. They want to clown world our language so can we.
I agree in some ways with this - and admit that it does play into identity politics a bit. but the thing is that's the game which is being played right now. It's a bad game to play but look around - every group gets a shiny label they can embrace and celebrate for a whole month every year - every group but one.
Part of that has been accepting the label which has been forced upon us, which is now so dragged through the mud that it has become a bad-word and certainly not associated with anything good,.
So instead we should simply, calmly, firmly be demanding the correct term be used. It's a self respect thing.
