I believe the Irish came in as "Indentured Servants", which were a class lower than slaves. An "Indentured Servant" is a rental, they work some term of years, and you owe them nothing.
Whereas a Slave, you own; so you have ownership and you care if they live or die; an "Indentured" person, is just temporary. They tended to starve to death, die of exposure or other abuse.
