Fascinating! Another fabrication and morphing of narrative
I have a cookbook from the 60's. It actually contains the word "housewife" ... without sarcasm or disclaimers. It even implies that she is happy doing labor-intensive activities like "providing a special breakfast" or (gasp) "pleasing a man with his favorite pie." I get a satisfying kick every time.
Cookbooks are good historical documents. I have some from the Depression which have many tales of hard times as well as simple recipes. People canned weeds during drought when regular vegetables failed. One family mostly lived on potatoes and tomatoes. Chickens were for eggs--too precious to eat as meat.
