For a group that thrives on the dissemination of media, wtf can’t we save gifs? Is there some mobile magic I am just not understanding?

Easy enough.

Wget command will help you along. Leave the user defaults behind. Upgrade your skill!

If on android, you have a couple of options: Install Linux app, open terminal -> sudo pkg install wget. after install: wget "link to your gif" link to the folder/name.gif

Or there is an app httrack where you can scrape all kinds of thins from the net.
