He rose above the worst upbringing imaginable without becoming hardened or bitter, never played the victim card. I have great respect and admiration for him.

I don't know that much about him but after what you said, that makes me respect him more as well. There's too many that are so busy playing that victim card they don't find time in their day to try to lift up others.
