There s a comma, (also I tiny pause when siniging) the meaning changes, We are not trying to rest " Merry Gentlemen" (visualising a bunch of drunks)

The wish is for God to rest them merry.

Sorry for grammar naziing., but it is a pet peeve. from when I used to go carolling.
