"What was this light that God introduced into the world or the kosmos? If the Spirit of God will help us we will put this in words that will clearly help us to understand the great truth that God would teach us. Let us then take heed to the words of our faithful Lord when He spoke, saying, "I am the light of the kosmos," and "I am come a light into the kosmos, that whosoever believeth into me should not abide in darkness." Jesus claimed that He Himself was the light of the world, the kosmos, and if His claim was true, when did He become the light of the kosmos? The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness is not able to put it out. There was a man sent from God whose name was John (the Baptist). The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through Him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was THE TRUE LIGHT, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. HE WAS IN THE KOSMOS, AND THE KOSMOS WAS MADE BY HIM, AND THE KOSMOS KNEW HIM NOT" (Jn. 1:1-10).

We are, or will be born in Christ and will die TO this world. In both cases the New Jerusalem coming down from Heaven is there to make a statement as to what is Holy and what is profane. The New Jerusalem IS the very church of God, seated in Heavenly places, but now answering to the need of the earth to come into full restoration. For the Body of Christ and the New Jerusalem are the very same thing. The church of Christ, and all the members therein form this Glorious City. The foundation of this City is comprised of the Apostles of the Lamb, and upon it each stone has been built by that wise Master Builder who is the Lord Himself, and then we take heed to build thereon with care and caution as to the sensitivity of Spiritual things that we hold to be truth. The New Jerusalem is the very manifestation of the life of the Lord, in His people, in the earth. It is a “future” element. Although it is a “present” reality as we are seated with Christ in Heavenly places."
The "city" is referring to the new Jerusalem, part of the new Heaven and new Earth.
Revelation 21:1-4
"Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”[a] for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’[b] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”"
"As the bride of the Lamb and the sons of God come to perfection and the fullness of Christ, the lights and luminaries of the old spiritual heavens truly become darkened, so that the word of the seer of Patmos becomes wondrously fulfilled in us — "And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof."

It's the glorious city of God, the people of God are called new Jerusalem, it is the perfected body of Christ, the readied bride of Christ!
All of these things are a Spiritual interpretation of the book of Revelation, it is a gift to the Body of Christ!
