Executing PoWs sadly not unusual. My grandpa was in the army in WW2 and told us about the times a German PoW was taken into the woods and not brought back.
We've gotten so used to the privilege of judging after the fact, slow-mo instant replay sports style. On the ground things are always messy because that's humans fighting to the death. It's rare that there is a clear "good guy" in these situations. Sometimes surrender is not black and white.
Nazis did the same thing in WW2.. one of the reasons some of the Americans fought to the death.
