Potato blight didn't help matters.
Yeah, blaming late blight on a cabal is just stupid. The response to an epidemic, sure. Some disasters can be planned, others can only be capitalized on.
The problem was the landlords would only let the Irish eat potatoes so while they were growing other crops that too were not failing they were not allowed have them because they were for the landlord.
If they had biolabs in those days I would guess where it came from. They just got an extra lucky bonus I suppose.
