I know it's overly suspicious, but who's to say he drank those? Maybe he just placed them there for a reason?

Like being asked what color a car is. It may look red or whatever, but you're assuming the side of the car you can't see is also red. Probably a very safe assumption, but you don't know until you walk around and look at it yourself.
