After Rolls-Royce bought out Bentley, the cars were practically identical for a number of years. Rolls-Royce itself declared bankruptcy in 1971 and the car division was sold off. Now Rolls-Royces are made by BMW and Bentleys are made by Volkswagen.
There was a time when Rolls-Royce was proud to make probably the most famous engine used by the RAF in its 1940s planes that saw off the Luftwaffe. Their opponents had BMW engines among others and their pilots may well have driven a VW, literally the "people's car" of the Third Reich.
