Here's a site for eruption statistics, by month and year, so you can compare. Two caveats, some eruptions go unnoticed because they are on the sea floor, and this site is including "unrest" as well as actually throwing lava. https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/volcanoes/eruptions/statistics.html
This site has graphics comparing explosiveness. After all, eruptions vary widely in size. https://www.nps.gov/subjects/volcanoes/volcanic-explosivity-index.htm
Miscellany about volcanoes. There are 1350 potentially active volcanoes in the world, at least, so 27 going off is not too many. There are about 60 eruptions a year, and of those, some are pretty constant or last for months.https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/how-do-volcanoes-erupt
There is some correlation of cooling periods and increased volcanic activity. The mechanism that causes it is unknown. Something about the magnetic field of the sun interacting with the magnetic field of the Earth... or something.
This happened during the "little ice age". Krakatoa in 1816 is one example (which caused the year without a summer - when Mary Shelley wrote the book Frankenstein).
