Tough question. Wood for heat works pretty well if you can lay in a good supply before cold weather sets in. You can buy tri-fuel generators that use gasoline, propane or natural gas. For those of us in hot climates like Arizona, generators with a swamp cooler is about all you can do for that. Also, run the generator long enough to keep the refrigerators and freezers cold and wait it out. You need a lot of solar panels to do what I just described. Storage is a problem, for sure.
