I'm sorry, but that's simply not true. Evidence can be placed under seal, even for indefinite periods. Courts try to avoid doing this but it's especially common if the case involves allegedly classified material or if the evidence is involved in other ongoing cases.
This case was pretty straight forward, I highly doubt it was intended to be some 5-D chess move. Trumps team asked for a special master to be appointed to protect his privileged materials. Pretty sensible move, if a bit unusual. The judge initially granted it but after some legal fighting, the judge has basically undone everything and it's more or less like it never happened.
It seems like Trumps team is choosing not to fight it, probably because it's not essential at the end of the day.
Trump doesn't need the court at all. He can release the materials any time he wants since he declassified them. If he hasn't so far it's because he's chosen not to...simple as that.
