Thomas Paine awoke about a third of the Colonies people with his 50 page pamphlet titled "Common Sense". About 500,000 were printed and distributed when the population was only ~2.5 million.
The numbers weren't in his favor (just like us) but once word spread from family to family and people learned what the tyrannical forces were capable of, people were ready to sacrifice their wealth, property, jobs and their lives to be free.
